Regulated gas work in Great Britain has to be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Checking that registration is a short step and it is worth doing before anyone opens a boiler.
Use the official register
- Go to the Gas Safe Register find-an-engineer page.
- Search using the business registration number. Ours is 227442.
- Read what the listing shows. Registration is real; categories of work are specific.

Ask to see the ID card
A registered engineer should be able to show a Gas Safe ID card. Check the photograph, the name and the expiry date. The card is the on-the-doorstep check; the website is the check you can do before the visit.
Why the check exists
Gas boilers, gas pipework and gas appliances are not DIY. An unregistered person should not be connecting, modifying or commissioning that equipment. The Gas Safe page sets out the legal point in more detail.
If you smell gas
Do not wait for an engineer’s diary. Leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. That number is published by National Gas and the gas distribution networks.
Once the situation is safe, a registered engineer can deal with any follow-up work on the appliance or the heating system.
