Common boiler problems
Homeowners call us with a wide range of symptoms. These are among the most common, and each can have more than one cause:
- Boiler not firing — no heat and often no hot water; may relate to ignition, gas supply, controls or a safety lockout
- No heating — the boiler may fire but radiators stay cold, or the heating circuit will not run
- No hot water — a combi issue, cylinder/controls problem on a system or regular boiler, or a shared fault with heating

A pressure loss, for example, can come from a leaking radiator valve, a failing expansion vessel or a heat exchanger issue. Treating the display code alone is rarely enough.

Boiler fault codes
Modern boilers often show a code when they lock out. A code is a useful clue — it can point towards ignition, overheat, pressure, flue or sensor problems — but it is not a complete diagnosis on its own. The same code can have different root causes depending on the make, age and how the system is installed.

Common questions
My boiler keeps locking out and showing a fault code — what should I do?
Note the code, try a single reset if the manufacturer instructions allow it, and check whether heating, hot water or both have failed. If it locks out again, stop resetting and book a diagnosis. Repeated resets without finding the cause can mask a developing fault. Tell us the make and the code when you call.
Why does my boiler keep losing pressure even after I top it up?
If pressure drops again within days, water is leaving the sealed system. Common causes include a leaking radiator valve, a hairline pipe leak, a failing expansion vessel, or an internal boiler fault. Topping up is a temporary measure — the source needs finding rather than endless refill.
The radiators are cold but the boiler seems to be running — is that still a boiler repair?
It can be. Cold radiators with a firing boiler often point to circulation, sludge, a stuck pump, zone valves or balancing — not always a dead heat exchanger. We diagnose the appliance and the heating circuit together so you are not sold a boiler part for a system problem, or vice versa.
I only have hot water in the morning, or heating that cuts out randomly — can that be fixed?
Intermittent faults are common and harder to catch than a total failure. They can relate to overheat, blocked heat exchangers, poor flow, flaky sensors or control issues. A proper visit while you describe the pattern of failure is more useful than guessing from a phone description alone.
When is repair no longer worth it compared with a new boiler?
Repair is usually sensible on a relatively recent appliance with a contained fault and available parts. Replacement deserves a serious look when the boiler is elderly, keeps failing, needs a major heat exchanger or PCB that costs a large share of a new unit, or sits on a heating system that also needs renewing. We set that out after inspection rather than pushing either option.
