Gas Cooker Installation
A gas cooker has to be installed and connected by a suitably registered engineer. Etchells Plumbing Services carries out gas cooker installation for residential and commercial customers across South Birmingham, Bromsgrove, Hagley, Kidderminster and the corridor towards Bewdley. Gas Safe registered 227442.
That is the main gas appliance service on this page: fitting a new cooker, replacing an existing one, and connecting it safely to the gas supply. Other gas appliance work is assessed against our Gas Safe registration when you enquire.
What gas cooker work involves
- Installation — fitting a new cooker where a suitable supply exists or can be arranged within registration
- Replacement — swapping an existing cooker, including disconnection of the old appliance
- Connection — safe connection to the gas supply (including bayonet / hose arrangements where appropriate)
- Disconnection — removing a cooker safely when replacing or clearing a kitchen
A replacement onto an existing, suitable point is a different job from bringing a new gas supply into the room. Both need to be planned against the property — not assumed from a product brochure.

- Whether the cooker is already on site or still to be delivered
- Whether a gas supply already exists in the kitchen
- Whether this is a like-for-like replacement or a first-time installation
- Any constraints around cooker position, hose length or bayonet fitting

Good practice / installation standards
Cookers must be installed in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and applicable gas safety requirements for the appliance class. Clearances, hose routing and ventilation requirements vary by model. We match the install to the appliance instructions and safe practice for the property. Ask for the cooker model when you enquire if you already have it.
Regulated gas connection work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Where you provide a gas cooker for tenants, it generally sits within landlord gas safety duties — see landlord gas safety (CP12) and HSE guidance on which appliances need checks. Tenant-owned appliances are treated differently.
Note: England’s carbon monoxide alarm rules for rented homes require alarms in living-accommodation rooms with a fixed combustion appliance excluding gas cookers — see landlord services and HMO services. That is separate from cooker installation itself.

Safety if something seems wrong
If an existing cooker is not lighting correctly, smells of gas, or you are concerned about how it is running, stop using it and arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect it. For a suspected leak, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

Common questions
We are swapping a freestanding cooker for another one on the same bayonet — do you still need to attend?
Yes. Connecting or disconnecting a gas cooker is regulated gas work. Even a like-for-like swap onto an existing point needs a Gas Safe registered engineer to make the connection and check it is safe to use. Do not attempt the flexible hose yourself.
Our new kitchen has no gas point yet — can you run a supply?
That depends on where a suitable supply can be taken from and what falls within our Gas Safe registration for the job. Tell us what is already in the kitchen and whether the cooker is replacing an electric appliance. Some kitchens need pipework planning before the cooker can be fitted.
The cooker lights but smells of gas when it runs — is that an installation issue?
Any smell of gas needs caution. If you smell gas strongly, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first. For a milder concern after an installation or with an existing cooker, stop using the appliance and arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect it.
Do landlords need gas cookers on the annual gas safety check?
Landlord-provided gas appliances are generally included in landlord gas safety duties. Tenant-owned appliances are treated differently under HSE guidance. See our landlord gas safety (CP12) page. Do you fit cookers for rented properties and commercial kitchens?
We carry out gas cooker installation for residential and commercial customers in our working area where the work sits within our registration. Landlords preparing a rental often book a cooker fit alongside other gas work — say so when you enquire. Large commercial catering plant may sit outside domestic registration; we will say if a job is out of scope.
