Etchells Plumbing Services is recruiting an apprentice gas engineer — someone who wants to start a practical career in domestic plumbing, heating and gas work with a Gas Safe registered local firm.
The business is based in South Birmingham and works a corridor through Bromsgrove, Hagley, Kidderminster and towards Bewdley. An apprentice would learn by assisting experienced engineers on real domestic jobs, not by sitting in an office.
The opportunity
This is an entry route into the trade. You would work alongside qualified engineers, learn how domestic heating jobs are planned and carried out, and build practical habits around safety, tools, customer service and site organisation.
Important: regulated gas work must only be carried out by people with the appropriate Gas Safe competence. An apprentice must not independently connect, disconnect or work on gas appliances or gas pipework. Any involvement in gas-related jobs is under the supervision and legal responsibility of a suitably registered engineer.
We do not publish unverified promises about college funding, apprenticeship duration, guaranteed qualifications or automatic Gas Safe registration. Those details will be explained clearly once confirmed for this vacancy.
What you may be exposed to
Under supervision, an apprentice may see and assist with work involving:
- Domestic boilers and heating systems
- Radiators, pipework and heating controls
- Preparation for boiler repairs and replacements
- Central heating installation work
- Gas appliances (observation / assistance only within legal limits)
- Customer communication on site
- Safe working practices and tidy workmanship
Who this may suit
This opportunity may suit someone who wants to begin a career in plumbing, heating and gas engineering and who is interested in practical, hands-on work. We welcome applications from people starting out, changing career direction, or looking for a structured way into the trade.
We do not use age-coded or discriminatory language. Entry requirements beyond the points listed on this page will be confirmed as the vacancy is filled.
Working area
The business address is 21 Kingsdown Road, Birmingham, B31 1AJ. Day-to-day work involves travelling the Etchells service corridor with the team across South Birmingham and into Worcestershire — not every named SEO location on the website as a separate workplace.
Use the application form on this page to apply. We do not accept applications by phone or email.

- Assist experienced engineers on domestic plumbing and heating jobs
- Observe and help with safe preparation of work areas and materials

What we're looking for
- Genuine interest in a practical career in plumbing, heating and gas engineering
- Willingness to learn, take instruction and work safely on site
- Reliable timekeeping and clear communication
Desirable
- Practical DIY, college or workshop experience (helpful but not assumed)
- Full UK driving licence (helpful for travelling with the team — confirm if applying)
