Winter is when a weak boiler becomes a household problem. The useful preparation is noticing the system in autumn, not taking the appliance apart.
Use the heating before you need it
Run the heating on a cool day in autumn. Walk the house. Radiators that stay cold, a boiler that lockouts, or hot water that takes far longer than it used to are all easier to deal with before the first hard frost.
That is the moment to book a boiler repair if something is already wrong.
Bleeding a radiator is not gas work
If you already know how to bleed a radiator and a single radiator is cold at the top, that is ordinary household maintenance. If several radiators are cold, the boiler is noisy, or pressure keeps disappearing, stop and call an engineer. Those are system or appliance faults.
Do not add inhibitors, strip valves or flush a system yourself unless you have been specifically instructed as part of a planned job.
Controls
Check that the room thermostat and programmer still do what you think they do. A heating system that appears “broken” in October is sometimes a control that was turned down in April and never revisited. If the boiler is firing and the house still will not warm, that is a different problem.
When the boiler is already on borrowed time
If last winter was a sequence of lockouts or the appliance is old, the autumn conversation may be repair or replace rather than another short repair. A Gas Safe registered engineer can inspect the appliance and say which side of that line you are on.

If you smell gas at any point, leave the property and call 0800 111 999. That is not a seasonal tip; it is the standing rule.
